“Contradictory Empires”

Throughout the Nineteenth Century many dominant empires were controlling the continents under the umbrella of imperialism such as Great Britain, France, the Hispanic Monarchy, and Portugal. Therefore, democracy, liberalism, and industrialization were these movements and trends that had been displayed along with this period, “The Age of Imperialism”; so in my point view, these trends were intentionally contradicted in establishing an empire on what pretext they have- to industrialize and modernize the world. For instance, this democracy that appeared after the French Revolution, which was applied in the internal government of these empires only, without the colonized states that were supposed to be ‘modernized’ ideologically; because of revolutions massacres by General Neill at Allahabad, the force selling of the Egyptian Suez Canal to France and Britain. Also, technology the descendant of the industrial revolution was contradicted by the controlling empires, they built and developed their states and neglected the colonizes, in all types of industrialization except for the beneficial machineries as in transportation – trains, and the use of armaments. As well, the linguistic view plays a very significant role in perceiving the negative connotation of superiority and dominance in empires, as an empire is defined, as supreme political power over several countries when exercised by a single authority” (1). And after an era and five centuries all these ‘rightful' and ‘modernizing’ empires cease to exist and returns to there… to the small, petite, pequeña, & pequena lands.

  1. This is an interesting comment on the contradictions inherent within Empire. Can you follow up just by directly addressing your question, was the system of empire unfair by accident or was it like that by design? Think about the aims of empire and how these aims were achieved.
